Presentation of the Drôme
The Drôme belongs to the region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes (AURA). He is situated in the southeast quarter of France.
His name comes from the river of the same name. The Insee and the Post office attributed him the code 26.
His inhabitants are Drômois and Drômoises. His prefecture is Valence. The department contains 364 municipalities.

- History

The department was created in the French Revolution, on March 5th, 1790 in law enforcement of December 22nd, 1789, from a part of the province of Dauphiné to which it was up with Isère and Hautes-Alpes, and parts stemming from Provence and from Comtat venaissin (Comtat venaissin, or Comtat, is a former State which was a part of States of Eglise).
The limits of the department were modified several times following the annexation of Comtat venaissin in 1792 then following the creation of the department of Vaucluse in 1793. The cities of Carpentras and Valréas, in particular, were a part of the Drôme in a short-lived way. These modifications created the enclave of Vaucluse (canton of Valréas) in the Drôme, one of the two only persistent enclaves of this kind in France with those of the department of the Hautes-Pyrénées in the department of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. - The Drôme of hills

Along the valley of Isère up to the stiff slopes of Vercors, a landscape in the soft and hilly forms catches the eye. The Drôme of hills inhales the tranquillity, the unusual with the Palace of the Factor Horse, the strange with these caves and wrens cut in the molasse. The Drôme of Hills benefits from a central position in Rhône-Alpes. She is situated in the crossroads of Isère, Ardèche and the Valley of the Rhône, with motorway and railroad very developed axes (A7, A9, TGV station). This territory called the North the Drôme till the end of the 80s was identified under the name of the Drôme by Hills further to the will of elected representatives and of local actors in association with the General Council of the Drôme.

- The plain of Valence

Placed on the European connection between the North and the South, Valence, prefecture of the department is forward-looking by keeping its charm of former days. Beautiful houses decorated with splendidly sculptured facades build the old city. His streets, his squares are trading. The pedestrians are kings there, where cars are badly seen. Landscape marked by big arrangements. Situated between the Rhône on the West, the valley of Isère in the North, Piedmont of Vercors in the East and the valley of the Drôme in the South. The hand of the man is very present on this entity: large cities (Valence, Roman, Loriol and Livron), dense housing environment, big arrangements (airport of Valence-Chabeuil, highway A7, TGV).

- Royans - Vercors

The Royans is a small natural region situated between the foot of the massif of Vercors and the left bank of Isère. He is divided between the territories of the department of the Drôme and that of Isère. We speak about Royans-Drôme and Royans-Isère. The magnificent panoramas open for you between cliffs, trays and caves. Where the granite and the verticality are sovereign, the men built grand and audacious roads. A past enlivened during the Second World War makes of this region, a place steeped in history and of heroism. Here the walkers, the sportsmen, the nature lovers can bloom in the environment of luxurious spaces. The Royans is a part of the natural Regional Park of Vercors.

- The Valley of the Drôme

Between the south extreme of Vercors and the beginning of Provence, the river the Drôme dug a wide valley. Always savage, his angers are formidable, parks in banks and works weakened by time. His hillsides sour to the sun welcome a vineyard which gives a sparkling wine full of sweetness, the lavender, and the other treasures which decorate the tables of the gourmands. His water welcomes as much the swimmers as the canoeists. In the crossroads of Vercors and Provence, the Valley of the Drôme will seduce you by its contrasts and its vitality. Rich in a striking cultural and natural heritage, she will fill the expectations of each: visits of the perched villages, gone hiking within classified natural spaces, bathings, tastings or still musical festivals will give rhythm to your stay among us.
